I think I should just delete this blog. I have no idea how to manage this space properly :(
Guess what, it's HO-LI-DAYYYY! Woweee. I shall spend most of my holidays, sleeping. I'm kidding. Really need to sleep more before school starts after three weeks! But for design students, holidays=no holiday. D: Things-to-do before school starts:
-Sketches for silkscreen
-HTI journal
-Portfolio
-Master photoshop CS5!! (Any pro reading this now? I need help :( )
I've submitted these two best shots for GC module! Please give me an A :P
Before you read the long, longgggg "compo" below, let me tell you what happened before this. So there's a girl in Year 1 from my school couldn't submit her GC module because she was late for 13 minutes. She wrote a post explaining how did things cropped up and caused her to be late for submission and apparently this post attracted over 190 comments 0.0. And then, one of my seniors wrote another post which I think what he said is really true. It kinda made me think a lot and..you know, those posts that you'll go true, true *nods head*. Now before you continue reading, the post is freaking long. Don't say I never warn you :)
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Apparently long posts in group pages are all the rage with you youngsters nowadays, so I’m gonna try my hand at it too.
First off, most of the people who know me will probably say that I act like an idiot almost all the time. But that’s only because I am an idiot. Be that as it may, I take pride in the amount of self-awareness that I have. I take a look at myself in relation to the current context before I say anything, so that I don’t appear too overbearing or rude, or whatever.
That being said, I’m going to sound like I’m contradicting myself almost immediately, but obviously since I’m acknowledging it right now that cancels it out. Like I said, self-awareness.
I think it’s cute that you freshies feel a sense of pride in belonging to the School of Design, and there’s definitely nothing wrong with that.
What IS wrong is when you start attributing every miniscule event or habitual choice that occurs in your life to SD. For example:
“Sleep? Design students don’t know what ‘sleep’ is! WHOOHOO SD FTW!!!111carrots”
No.
Procrastinators don’t know what sleep is, because they’re too busy lazing around to finish their work and get a chance to do it. I am admittedly one of those procrastinators, but then again I’ve never said anything about the implications of my course on my sleeping habits.
Furthermore, a lot of you have probably read Ling Xuan’s post a while back, shrugged, and said:
“In Design School, shit happens.”
Wrooong.
In LIFE, shit happens.
If the previous statement were in fact the truth I would transfer to Business right now and die happily, with Maeda Atsuko as my devastated widow, a new line of Calpis named after me, and a posthumous recurring fictional appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man as ‘his best, most awesomest friend’.
… Sorry, I kind of got carried away there.
Anyway, when submission-related mishaps happen that can’t be fixed, it’s natural to feel frustrated and want to let off some steam. But instead of posting about it online, you should just talk to your friends about it, or engage in some harmless, relaxing activities, like killing a cat or making bomb threats to the airport. Basically whatever you can do to avoid thinking about the incident, because it’s just going to piss you off more.
Some of you might have already said that but I wouldn’t know, because I honestly cannot be bothered to read through 191 comments.
Seriously? One-hundred-and-ninety-one comments? I’m almost tempted to go there and find out what the hell you guys have even been talking about.
Almost.
Whatever it is, Ling Xuan obviously had already learned her lesson (the lesson being that life SUCKS) and the matter should already have been lain to rest. Or so I thought.
Guys, guys, guys. I know our courses are all pretty tough, on both the soul and the wallet, but let’s not get too carried away, okay?
It makes no sense to complain about something we’ve willingly enrolled ourselves into, seriously.
Oh, who am I kidding. We both know you’re just exaggerating the woes of design school to make yourself seem more impressive for surviving them, riiight?
You can survive in SD without sacrificing your entire soul and several virgin girls to it. There is no need to have 75 thumbdrives, there isn’t even any need in printing any more copies than required for submission, unless you predict one copy will somehow get destroyed along the way, and what kind of person actually plans for his shit to get ruined?
I’m far from a model student, and I’m going to frankly say I’m painfully disinterested in most of the things I’m learning. But surprise surprise, I’m not dead! See, design school ISN’T that hard. (Why do I get the feeling I’m going to regret saying that very soon? Hmmm.)
More importantly, I’m sure most people don’t like to be told what to do. Everyone has their own way of doing things, and since there’s more than one way to do anything, it all works out fine. Let’s just leave it at that.
Oh, and making any excessive remarks about life in design school, whether they’re positive or negative, like it’s some kind of gang? I’m sorry guys but that’s just straight up pretentious. Design students are no cooler than Business students. If we were, where are OUR hot girls at?!
I’m just kidding.
Long story short, don’t be a ‘design student’. Be a freaking person. You’ll learn that you can like more things than fonts and hate more things than long queues at printing shops that way.
Well, that’s it, any of you who have bothered to read the whole thing, you can claim one Fruit Plus from me when school reopens.
If I’ve offended anyone, I’m not going to apologize, I’m just going to admit that I offended you.
Self-awareness, baby.
Love,
Khairi
I'm seriously impressed by this post ;) And I agree with what they say, SD can organize an essay or a debating competition already. lol
-I must learn to love and like my design and stop feeling that what I design is crap.
